Women love sundresses, such as this one from J. Crew, for their comfort and versatility.
Men say that the sundress is one of the sexiest items a woman can wear, reports the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor. That means men and women can agree on one thing this summer: A sundress is a must-have fashion statement for women. Women love the sundress's comfort and versatility, and men praise its wholesome sex appeal.
Men aged 16 to 55 across the country were asked whether a good-looking woman looks sexiest in an elegant dinner dress, denim jeans and a shirt, or a sundress. At 42 percent, the largest segment of men prefers the sundress over the jeans look (28 percent) or a more formal dress (26 percent).
"The sundress is an institution," says Felice Pappas, a Miami-based designer of irresistibly charming sundresses. "It's what a girl looks forward to wearing as soon as the flowers blossom in the spring."
When asked about the source of the sundress's appeal, virtually every man alluded to its wholesome and innocent quality, versus the attention-grabbing miniskirt, for example. They agreed that the sundress possesses a girlish innocence and lack of pretense.
"There's something really playful and confident about a woman in a sundress," says Peter, a 27-year-old community health educator in Portland, Ore. "She's not restrained -- she can move freely and be comfortable. It's festive -- it shows that she wants to enjoy the day." But what about the woman's point of view on the sundress? "Women love sundresses for their diversity," explains Jo Cohen, director of the Cottonworks® Fabric Library at Cotton Incorporated. "You can wear it almost anywhere -- to the beach over a bathing suit, to the office on casual Friday dressed up with a cardigan, to the kids' Little League games. You can even glam up a snugly fitting black sundress with jewelry and high heels and go out in the evening."
And women agree that there is nothing more comfortable and relaxed on a hot summer day than a cotton sundress -- whether it be gingham, floral, ankle- or knee-length, strapless, or worn with a matching jacket. "People really rely upon cotton in the summer to keep them cool, and the sundress is perfectly suited to cotton," says Cohen.
"Women look forward to summer to get out of all those layers of clothes and bare their shoulders and just feel a little more sexy," says Pappas. "You feel great because you look good -- it's nice to turn some heads!"
